May is Mental Health Awareness Month: Taking Action Through Connection, Community & Lived Experience đź’š
Mental Health Awareness Week is a time to reflect on the importance of mental wellbeing, challenge stigma, and remind ourselves that nobody should have to face life’s struggles alone.
This year’s message asks an important question:
How will you take action – for yourself, for others, and for all of us?
At CAPITAL, this question sits at the heart of everything we do. As a peer-led charity rooted in lived experience, we know that positive mental health grows through connection, understanding, and community. Awareness is not just something we speak about for one week each year – it’s something we actively live, promote, and nurture every single day.
The Power of Community
Mental health can often feel isolating, but healing and hope are often found in connection. A conversation, a shared experience, or simply feeling seen and heard can make a meaningful difference to someone’s wellbeing.
At CAPITAL, we create safe, welcoming spaces where people can come together without judgement. Through peer support, community hubs, creative activities, workshops, and lived experience involvement, we aim to ensure that everyone feels valued, included, and supported.
As a peer-led organisation, we believe there is strength in people supporting people. Lived experience helps us build understanding, reduce stigma, and remind others that recovery and resilience are possible.
Taking Action for Yourself
Looking after your mental health doesn’t always mean making huge changes. Often, the most important steps are the smallest ones — resting when you need to, reaching out to someone you trust, taking time for a hobby, or simply acknowledging how you’re feeling.
Being kind to yourself is an action.
Setting boundaries is an action.
Asking for help is an action.
Mental health is not about “having it all together.” It’s about recognising our needs and giving ourselves permission to care for them.
Taking Action for Others
Sometimes, the simplest gestures can have the biggest impact. Checking in on a friend, listening without judgement, or making space for honest conversations can help someone feel less alone.
We all have the ability to contribute to a more compassionate and understanding community. By speaking openly about mental health, challenging stigma, and supporting one another, we help create environments where people feel safer to seek support.
At CAPITAL, we see every day how powerful peer connection can be. Knowing that someone understands your experience can bring comfort, hope, and belonging.
Taking Action for All of Us
Mental health awareness is about more than individual wellbeing – it’s about creating communities where support, inclusion, and compassion are part of everyday life.
At CAPITAL, we continue to champion lived experience, co-production, and peer-led approaches because we know meaningful change happens when people are listened to, empowered, and involved.
Together, we can continue breaking down stigma, building stronger communities, and ensuring mental health support feels accessible, human, and connected.
The Power of Connection and Belonging
Feeling connected to others is a vital part of wellbeing. Sometimes, simply knowing someone cares or shares your experience can be a balm for the soul. CAPITAL provides opportunities to build these meaningful connections gently and naturally.

The [hub] atmosphere was very friendly, I could be open and honest without being judged.

Really value the special warmth and encouragement at these hubs & outings. We all get to share and feel relaxed and part of the group. Can really feel the supportive bonds between everybody. We leave uplifted and relaxed and looking forward to enjoying life more. Very good for confidence and connections.
